Kulintang Kultura honors the late Danongan “Danny” Kalanduyan (1947-2016), a renowned musician and teacher who played a pivotal role in preserving and promoting traditional Filipino kulintang gong music in the United States. This two-disc set captures both the traditional and contemporary dimensions of Filipino musical heritage. Disc 1 showcases Kalanduyan’s ensemble performing a traditional Philippine repertoire at the height of their artistry. Disc 2 shifts focus to Filipino musicians in the diaspora, blending kulintang traditions with modern genres like electronica, hip-hop, rock, jazz, and more. Featured artists include Han Han & DATU, Kulintronica, Gingee, Fred Ho, The Asian American Art Ensemble, Kulintang Arts, and many others.
Kulintang Kultura celebrates the enduring spirit of Filipino music—both ancient and modern, rooted and global. With over 100 minutes of music and extensive liner notes, this collection is a testament to the lasting influence of kulintang music in Filipino culture and its evolving role in contemporary music scenes.
